A pervasive consumer culture??
The situation is that I reject all of the goals of a capitalist society. I don’t want to be part of this consumerism and the exploitive practices of corporate America. I don’t want to continue on this path of wreaking environmental havoc for the sake of convenience. Especially I can’t stand to see pseudo-environmentalists and humanitarians buying hybrid cars and fair trade coffee who don’t recognize the real problem as one of overconsumption. So basically it feels like I have to turn my back on this whole society. This makes me feel alone. It makes me feel crazy because I don’t see many others doing the same who aren’t labeled “rebels,” “revolutionaries,” or “extremists” i.e. pariahs. I feel like this isn’t an option even if it’s the right thing to do. I don’t really know how to reconcile some of these facts.
this has been something I’ve been thinking about too. America’s pretty rich, Annabel. We don’t really have much to do with our time except consume or work so we can continue to consume.
I don’t know much about Davis, but I think this kind of problem is really really bad here in So-cal. Maybe it’s just a young people thing. But I agree, there’s a lot of consumerism out there, and it’s tough to take a stand against it. It’s easy enough, I think, to not consume, though this may run you the risk of not connecting as well with people around. One of the ways you find out about people around you by looking at the material items they use - their shoes, their clothes, the pens or laptops or phones they use.
I think you should walk around barefoot. Design your own clothes, refuse to reconcile a moral stance with convenience or practicality. Together we can start our own revolution
Oh god, fuck life. It’s not just about expressive consumption, it’s about the resources we’re wasting to get a new pair of Nikes and about the laborers being exploited and the giant chunks of the Amazon beign plowed over to plant soy crops for cow feed. BUT I look around me and I see that this is systemic. There is virtually no way to operate in this society without consuming. I’m pulling my hair out dude.

the entire system is founded on us consuming because americans tend to be specialists who don’t have time to engage in subsistence agriculture, and bc our economy is going down now we notice how stupid our system is because it’s costing us more. Anyways, as long as the “modern” world has the military might to keep the rest of the world conforming to the capitalist ideal we’re stuck with it because this society tends to run on mass conformity, reducing the power of the individual by causing people who don’t automatically suck up the new big thing in music and tv and sports to get peripheralized and lol idk where i’m going with this but its all a bunch of shit and i’d rather go live in the woods eating sticks
